Drone footage showed damaged houses and muddied streets littered with debris in Manila on Thursday (July 25), after Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) dumped heavy rains triggering floods in the Philippine capital and nearby provinces killing at least 12 people and displacing over 600,000.
Residents of Marikina, a riverside town in the nation’s capital, returned to their homes caked in mud after the river overflowed from yesterday’s floods.
The typhoon did not make landfall in the Philippines but intensified seasonal monsoon rains, causing landslides and flooding over the past few days.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr told the disaster relief agencies to provide assistance and prepare supplies for isolated communities during a briefing on Wednesday (July 24), and the mayors of 16 cities in the Greater Manila region have asked for emergency funding, officials said.
